The new year always feels like a fresh start. Many parents, myself included, begin January with resolutions: eating healthier, exercising more, or managing time better. But did you know that resolutions aren’t just for adults? Setting goals together as a family is a wonderful way to grow, connect, and achieve things as a team. In this blog, I’ll share practical tips on how to create family resolutions and, most importantly, how to stick to them.
Why Family Resolutions Work
When I started setting family goals, I quickly noticed how much it influenced our daily lives. It brought more structure and encouraged teamwork. Children learn important skills like planning, reflecting, and persevering. Plus, they feel heard and involved.
Tip: Focus on achievable and positive goals. Instead of saying, “we’ll have less screen time,” say, “we’ll plan a screen-free game night each week.”
Step 1: Reflect on the Past Year Together
One of the most memorable moments with my family was when we looked back on the past year. I asked everyone to share one thing they were proud of and one thing they’d like to do differently. This helps children recognize their own growth and motivates them to look ahead.
Step 2: Create a List of Goals Together
Brainstorming together is key. Ask your children what they’d like to achieve and add your own ideas. Simple, concrete goals could include:
Baking together every Sunday.
Spending more time outdoors.
Donating toys to children in need once a month.

Step 3: Write Down the Goals and Make Them Visual
In our home, it helps to make goals visible. We use a large sheet of paper to draw and decorate our goals. It hangs on the fridge, reminding us daily. This works especially well for younger children who benefit from visual cues.
Step 4: Keep It Fun and Measurable
Sticking to resolutions is all about consistency and enjoyment. Make your goals fun by attaching rewards to milestones. For example: if we have four screen-free evenings, we’ll plan a fun outing like a picnic or a trip to the zoo.
Step 5: Reflect Regularly
Take time once a month to review progress. What’s working well? What could be improved? Being open about your own challenges sets a great example. I tell my children, for instance, that I sometimes struggle to get enough sleep and ask how they can help me.
Creating and sticking to family resolutions doesn’t have to be complicated. By reflecting together, setting goals, and making it fun, you not only create wonderful memories but also strengthen your bond as a family. Give it a try this year and see the difference it makes.
